Warrior Wisewoman is an annual anthology series of science fiction featuring powerful and remarkable women, edited by Roby James. The first volume was published by Norilana Books in June 2008, the second volume in June 2009, and the third volume in August 2010.

The anthology was conceived as a sister volume to the classic Sword and Sorceress fantasy series originally edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley, with the main difference being that the story themes will involve science fiction instead of fantasy, and they will be intended for a more mature audience, allowing a mixture of serious contemporary issues and reasonable sexual content (but no erotica) in addition to action and adventure. The stories will have a stronger focus on the interface between scientific exploration and our sense of wonder.

Editor Roby James says:

“I am looking for stories that shed light on the truth of what it means to be female, that illuminate the wisdom and the strength of a woman, but not in cliché ‘goddess’ stories. I love action and adventure, grand space opera, thrilling discovery, and intelligent protagonists. Make the story thoughtful, wise, and surprising. In addition, the stories in the anthology should appeal to genuine emotions, suspense, fear, sorrow, delight, wonder. The science can be part of the background and the characters foremost, or the science can be central to the story, as long as the characters are realistic and appealing. It is strongly recommended you read the previous volumes to get an idea of what kind of material we’re looking for.”This is science fiction, but I also welcome stories of spiritual exploration, looking at the bond between the scientific and the divine. I want to see how a woman survives tragedy and disaster, overcomes impossible odds, achieves her true potential, or goes on to thrive in a marvelous universe of so many possibilities, using what is inside her, as well as what she finds in the laboratory, the alien planet, or space itself.

“The stories should contain the question of ‘what if’ on some level. And they should have a woman answer it.”

Read the editorial Introduction to Volume One.

Like a Moonrise

Circlet Press is looking for erotic coming-of-age stories about animal shapeshifters for the new ebook anthology, Like a Moonrise, edited by Artemis Savory and Cecilia Tan. All animals have instincts, but what happens when those instincts emerge in someone who is already settled in human life? Whether your character is just reaching adulthood (18+ characters only please) or whether their shapeshifting gives them a whole new adolescence, explore the struggle with urges and maturity. Most animals have a tender side, but sometimes they’re driven too far. What becomes suddenly irresistible, or despised? How does the particular shape affect their human lives? Are things different for werewolves versus were-tigers, for shifters who have phases versus those who can change at will? We’re looking for stories that focus on a human’s new identity as he/she becomes a shapeshifter, the everyday temptations and restraints, and especially the breaking point. Circlet Press welcomes sex-positive stories of all sexualities and preferences.

Submission Details:
Deadline for submission is October 15th. Our preferred length is approximately 3500 to 7500 words, but we will consider the range from 2000 to 10,000 words. All submissions must be made via email to the following address: artemissavory@gmail.com.

More details: Submissions sent to other addresses/other editors at Circlet Press will not be considered. Standard manuscript formatting rules apply even though sending as an attachment (MS Word .doc or .rtf preferred). Please note that this means your name, address, and email contact must appear on the manuscript itself and not simply in your email message. (If you’re not sure what standard short story submission format should look like, Google is your friend.)

No simultaneous submissions (that is, don’t also send your story elsewhere at the same time, and don’t send it to multiple Circlet editors, either), and no multiple submissions to the same book. One story per author per anthology, thanks.

All stories must include explicit sexuality and erotic focus. Romantic content is welcome, but in a short story remember to keep the details on the action and its effects on the main character’s internal point of view. Whether first person or third person, a strong, singular narrative voice is our preference (no ‘head hopping’ or swapping points of view within scene).

For more details on our editorial preferences, see the general submission guidelines on circlet.com. We highly recommend reading the guidelines, especially the “do not send” list, to increase your chances of sending us something we’ll love. Try to avoid cliches. Fresh and direct language is preferred to overly euphemistic. Sex-positive, please, no rape/nonconsensuality/necrophilia or other purposefully gross topics. We do not publish horror.

Originals only, no reprints. We purchase first rights for inclusion in the ebook anthology for $25, with the additional rights to a print edition later which would also be paid $25 if a print edition happens. Authors retain the rights to the individual stories; Circlet exercises rights to the anthology as a whole.

What is New Voices?

In September 2010 we launch a global search for fresh writing talent to join Mills & Boon’s galaxy of romantic fiction stars.

A celebration of romance, New Voices will put entrants through their romantic fiction paces – and we want you to have your say every step of the way!

The winner of the competition will win some fantastic prizes, including publication of the winning entry by Mills & Boon and a Mills & Boon editor for a year!

How Do I Enter?

Anyone who hasn’t been published before (see the Ts & Cs for more details!) can enter the competition; all you need to do is upload the first chapter of your Mills & Boon novel to this website from 6th September 2010. There’ll be just one entry per person allowed, so make sure that it’s your best! So, get writing!

How Will It Work?

There’ll be FOUR stages to the competition:

Stage One

We want everyone to upload the first chapter of their Mills & Boon novel! The best bit is that you’ll be able to read everyone else’s entry as well – and be able to comment on them too. Let’s get the romance debate going!

Stage Two

The Mills & Boon editorial team will whittle down all the entries to just ten finalists, who’ll be asked to write the second chapter of their Mills & Boon novel.

Stage Three

We’ll ask YOU to vote for your favourite entry out of the top ten. Along with the judges, you’ll decide on the four finalists who go through to the next round!

Stage Four

The finalists will write the ‘pivotal moment’ of their Mills & Boon novel. Then, with the judges, you’ll decide the winner by voting for your favourite.

Power to the romance fans!!!

How Do I Get Involved?

Whether you’re a writer or a reader – we need you! We’d love you enter the competition, and you can also join the debate:

  • Tell us which entry is your favourite
  • Tell us what kind of romances you like – and don’t like!
  • Vote for your favourite finalist and help to decide the winner

This is your chance to have your say about what Mills & Boon publishes and we can’t wait to hear from you!

And if that’s not enough, we’ve also got some great prizes and giveaways, so there’s plenty of reasons to stop by from 6th September.

Inspiration
