Corsets and Clockworks: Steampunk Erotic Romance
Editor: Kristina Wright
Publisher: Cleis Press
Publication Date: Fall 2011
Submission Deadline: February 15 (earlier submissions preferred!)
Payment: $100 per story and 2 copies of the book, on publication
E-mail: corsetsandclockworks@gmail.com

I am looking for romantic erotica that reflects the excitement, fantasy and rebellion of steampunk. Not sure what steampunk is? Think Victorian elegance and aesthetics meets futuristic invention and exploration. But it doesn’t have to be Victorian (or Edwardian) era—it can be any time period, real or imagined, that blends elements of science, history, fantasy and technology. The one thing the genre has long been missing is romantic relationships and erotic encounters. Steampunk erotic romance is shiny brass and crushed velvet; mechanical inventions and romantic conventions; sexual fantasy and kinky fetish.

The steampunk world includes steam engines and scientists, corsets and clockworks, aviators and airships, alchemy and anachronistic technologies—not to mention those damned goggles and gadgets that everyone always references when talking about the genre! Steampunk is a spirit of high adventure that bridges the past and future. It captures the imagination in ways that make the eyes go wide and the heart beat a little faster.

What I do want:
 Stories that embody the essence of steampunk and pay homage to the genre.
 Stories that fetishize steampunk elements.
 Time travel, alternate histories, “second” or parallel worlds and non-traditional steampunk settings.
 Stories that are lush, wicked, sexy and romantic.

What I don’t want:
 Stories that throw in everything but the steampunk kitchen sink.
 Stories that are pure camp. A little campy fun is okay, but don’t overdo it.
 Fan fiction or slash fiction. Do not steal another author’s characters, please.
 Stories that are more about the technology than the characters.

Steampunk often defies definition, but here are some examples of books, television shows and movies that are considered steampunk or contain elements of steampunk:
Kamagra is a medicine which is very effective medicine viagra sale in india in enhancing erection in male. From discount cialis canada 1999 to 2006, he was on the coaching staff at UAB. But it is crystal clear that http://miamistonecrabs.com/fall-ball/ online viagra can be considered as a beneficial companion of every male human being. viagra is a generic medicine that works almost similar in response to the disease. Beat Stress with Adaptogens In 1947, former Soviet Union research scientists Nicolai Lazarev and Israel Brekhman devised the word adaptogen. miamistonecrabs.com cheap viagra for sale  The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (comic book series and movie)
 Wild, Wild West (60s television show and 90s movie)
 Sherlock Holmes (the recent movie)
 H.G. Wells’ Time Machine
 Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
 Katie MacAlister’s romance novel Steamed!
 Joss Whedon’s Serenity (television series) and Firefly (movie)
 Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (movie, technically dieselpunk)
 Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere
 The Prestige (movie, technically gaslight romance)

There are many more, but hopefully this gives you an idea of the depth and breadth of steampunk. (Author Cherie Priest does an excellent job of defining steampunk on her website The Clockwork Century: http://theclockworkcentury.com/?p=165)

I want stories with strong plots, good character development and scorching hot sex. This collection will feature primarily heterosexual relationships, but stories may include lesbian and bisexual elements, triads, polyandrous relationships or group encounters.

Stories should be written with a female audience in mind and I have a preference for female point of view. No incest, bestiality or underage characters, please. According to Romance Writers of America, a romance must include two key elements: a central love story and an emotionally-satisfying, optimistic ending. So be sure to give me a steampunk story that is erotic and romantic!

Submission Guidelines: Unpublished stories only, no simultaneous submissions. The desired story length is 2,500-5,000 words. Double-space and indent the first line of each paragraph. Do not put extra spaces between paragraphs. Include your full contact information (legal name/pseudonym, mailing address and phone number) and a bio of 50 words or less written in the third person. Please paste your story into the body of your e-mail and attach it as a Microsoft Word .doc file.

Payment will be $100 per story and 2 copies of the book upon publication. Contributors retain the rights to their stories. I will notify contributors of their acceptance in June 2011, but please note that Cleis Press has final approval over the manuscript.

Send your submission to corsetsandclockworks@gmail.com with Submission: Story Title in the subject line. Please direct any questions to the same address.

The stories can have closed-door sex scenes, glossed-over sex scenes, or characters who are waiting until after the book is over. There can be as much romantic and sexual tension as the book can handle, but no explicit language, and all stories must end with a happily ever after or happy for now.

Warrior Wisewoman is an annual anthology series of science fiction featuring powerful and remarkable women, edited by Roby James. The first volume was published by Norilana Books in June 2008, the second volume in June 2009, and the third volume in August 2010.

The anthology was conceived as a sister volume to the classic Sword and Sorceress fantasy series originally edited by Marion Zimmer Bradley, with the main difference being that the story themes will involve science fiction instead of fantasy, and they will be intended for a more mature audience, allowing a mixture of serious contemporary issues and reasonable sexual content (but no erotica) in addition to action and adventure. The stories will have a stronger focus on the interface between scientific exploration and our sense of wonder.

Editor Roby James says:

“I am looking for stories that shed light on the truth of what it means to be female, that illuminate the wisdom and the strength of a woman, but not in cliché ‘goddess’ stories. I love action and adventure, grand space opera, thrilling discovery, and intelligent protagonists. Make the story thoughtful, wise, and surprising. In addition, the stories in the anthology should appeal to genuine emotions, suspense, fear, sorrow, delight, wonder. The science can be part of the background and the characters foremost, or the science can be central to the story, as long as the characters are realistic and appealing. It is strongly recommended you read the previous volumes to get an idea of what kind of material we’re looking for.”This is science fiction, but I also welcome stories of spiritual exploration, looking at the bond between the scientific and the divine. I want to see how a woman survives tragedy and disaster, overcomes impossible odds, achieves her true potential, or goes on to thrive in a marvelous universe of so many possibilities, using what is inside her, as well as what she finds in the laboratory, the alien planet, or space itself.

“The stories should contain the question of ‘what if’ on some level. And they should have a woman answer it.”

Read the editorial Introduction to Volume One.

Guidelines for Volume #4 of the Anthology:

Like a Moonrise

Circlet Press is looking for erotic coming-of-age stories about animal shapeshifters for the new ebook anthology, Like a Moonrise, edited by Artemis Savory and Cecilia Tan. All animals have instincts, but what happens when those instincts emerge in someone who is already settled in human life? Whether your character is just reaching adulthood (18+ characters only please) or whether their shapeshifting gives them a whole new adolescence, explore the struggle with urges and maturity. Most animals have a tender side, but sometimes they’re driven too far. What becomes suddenly irresistible, or despised? How does the particular shape affect their human lives? Are things different for werewolves versus were-tigers, for shifters who have phases versus those who can change at will? We’re looking for stories that focus on a human’s new identity as he/she becomes a shapeshifter, the everyday temptations and restraints, and especially the breaking point. Circlet Press welcomes sex-positive stories of all sexualities and preferences.

Submission Details:
Deadline for submission is October 15th. Our preferred length is approximately 3500 to 7500 words, but we will consider the range from 2000 to 10,000 words. All submissions must be made via email to the following address: artemissavory@gmail.com.

More details: Submissions sent to other addresses/other editors at Circlet Press will not be considered. Standard manuscript formatting rules apply even though sending as an attachment (MS Word .doc or .rtf preferred). Please note that this means your name, address, and email contact must appear on the manuscript itself and not simply in your email message. (If you’re not sure what standard short story submission format should look like, Google is your friend.)

No simultaneous submissions (that is, don’t also send your story elsewhere at the same time, and don’t send it to multiple Circlet editors, either), and no multiple submissions to the same book. One story per author per anthology, thanks.

All stories must include explicit sexuality and erotic focus. Romantic content is welcome, but in a short story remember to keep the details on the action and its effects on the main character’s internal point of view. Whether first person or third person, a strong, singular narrative voice is our preference (no ‘head hopping’ or swapping points of view within scene).

For more details on our editorial preferences, see the general submission guidelines on circlet.com. We highly recommend reading the guidelines, especially the “do not send” list, to increase your chances of sending us something we’ll love. Try to avoid cliches. We purchase first rights for inclusion in the ebook anthology for $25, with the additional rights to a print edition later which would also be paid $25 if a print edition happens. Authors retain the rights to the individual stories; Circlet exercises rights to the anthology as a whole.
